North Atlanta pole vaulter John Rudd has made steady progress since he took up the event as a sophomore just two years ago.

All the hours and hard work have paid off for the senior, who finished his high school career with a state championship at the boys’ state track and field meet in Jefferson May 8 through 10.

Competing in his first state meet, Rudd vaulted 13 feet, 6 inches to win the Class AAAAA title.

He qualified for the state meet with a third-place finish (12-6) at the AAAAA sectionals in Loganville April 26.

Rudd also finished runner-up (13-7) at the Region 6AAAAA meet at North Atlanta April 15 and won the pole vault at the Atlanta Track Classic city meet at Lakewood Stadium March 31 at 12-0.

“He’s worked long and hard for years over at Pole Vault Atlanta and then with us,” North Atlanta community coach George Sanderlin said. “He took up the pole vault as a sophomore, at Pole Vault Atlanta, and he took it up a notch each year. He was ranked No. 1 in AAAAA going into the [state] meet and sometimes it was a lot of pressure on him and he handled the pressure well. It was a culmination of three years of hard work.”

Rudd will attend Rice on an academic scholarship and will compete for the school’s track team.
