The spirit of Italy will be coming to Roswell this fall. The Roswell City Council unanimously approved an agreement Wednesday with the Southern Bicycle League to host the Gran Fondo Italia Atlanta-Roswell bike ride in October.

“We are very, very lucky for this opportunity to be on the world stage,” said Steve Acenbrak, Roswell’s director of transportation.

The ride will also be hosted in Aspen, Miami and Rio de Janeiro this year, he said. It will bring in participants not only from the local area but from across the country and around the world.

“We believe there will be some great economic benefit,” Acenbrak said.

The event will take place the weekend of Oct. 18 and 19.

“We will have a two-day expo here on the City Hall grounds,” Acenbrak said.

He said participants will be able to pick up their race packets and numbers, and there will be Italian food, products and other cultural aspects.

“There will be a gala dinner on Saturday night, and then Sunday will be the ride,” Acenbrak said. “At the end of the ride, you will come back and you will get a pasta dinner with wine.”

He said participants will choose to take part in a 30-mile, 60-mile or 100-mile bicycle ride with the longest stretch going all the way up to Jasper and then back to Roswell.

City Administrator Kay Love said the city is in the midst of the special events permitting process for Gran Fondo Italia. She said the Southern Bicycle League has already provided a $5,000 advanced deposit for the event.

Though she did not have an estimated figure for how much the event would cost the city, Love said the amount should be “nominal” and will include expenses for co-marketing the ride.

Acenbrak said Bike Roswell, a nonprofit organization that advocates cycling, will be putting $5,000 aside to handle contingencies.
