U.S. District Judge Thomas Thrash on Thursday sentenced Jerome Oberlton to serve 41 months in federal prison. Oberlton and his co-defendant Mahendra Patel, who is to be sentenced next month, will also have to pay restitution of $735,000.
Oberlton told the judge he accepts responsibility for his actions and never meant to harm anyone.
Oberlton resigned as chief of staff for Dallas, Texas, schools when he was indicted last year. He was chief information officer for Atlanta's school system from 2004 to 2007. Prosecutors say he and Patel accepted more than $60,000 in kickbacks from a district vendor.
