The hard work paid off for the Holy Innocents’ junior as he finished second individually and led the Golden Bears to a runner-up result in the team standings at the Class A private school boys’ golf tournament in Augusta May 20.
Asbury shot a 3-under-par 69 to finish one shot behind low medalist James Clark of Brookstone, which won the team championship.
He birdied the sixth hole and eagled the ninth on the front nine, then birdied the 10th, 11th and 18th on the back nine.
Asbury was also low medalist with a 2-under 70 at the Class A private school sectional tournament in Locust Grove May 7.
“Sam is a junior who has turned into a dominant golfer this season,” Holy Innocents’ coach Jim Griffin said. “Sam has consistently scored very close to par golf in several tournaments this season. He worked hard on his golf game last summer, playing in several junior sanctioned tournaments to improve his game and he became a player that is highly visible each time he represents Holy Innocents’ in a tournament.”
In addition to golf, Asbury also is a member of the school’s boys’ basketball team.
