Chamblee has grown throughout the years. According to the 2010 census, the population was at 9,892; up to 15,790 in 2012 and is currently estimated at 27,500. The primary reason for the growth is annexation, according to Deputy Development Director Jim Summerbell.
During several public meetings, Chamblee officials heard from local residents about what changes they would like for the future of the city. Summerbell said the public supports job creation and better transportation connectivity.
“Participants in the process have stressed the need for building a greater sense of place through continued efforts to implement the LCI study and its findings, including building a town center,” said Summerbell.
“Beautification of the city’s roadways and more prominent gateways to let visitors know they have entered the city have also been stressed.”
Neighboring municipality Brookhaven is also working on its comprehensive plan with a focus on gateways and connectivity. Summerbell said Chamblee leaders have met with planners of Doraville, Brookhaven and Dunwoody as examples of possible future development.
The city is in Phase I, or the Chamblee Next plan, where zoning ordinance and development regulations will set the policy foundation for the next stage, which will be the actual code revision.
“These foundational goals or policies include streamlining the code, encouraging the redevelopment in [a] fashion that makes the city easier to navigate for pedestrians, cyclists and transit riders and supporting local business and job creation,” said Summerbell.
In a community survey, results included improving sidewalks and crosswalks, improving intersections to improve traffic flow and safety and adding bike/pedestrian trails. Input was also given on the business side, mentioning the addition of more grocery stores, retail, restaurants and evening entertainment.
