Tim Stultz, the Post 2 school board member for Cobb County, will face Susan Thayer July 22 in the Republican primary runoff election. The district includes Vinings.

In the May 20 primary election, Thayer garnered 45.1 percent of vote while Stultz received 33.8 percent. The third candidate in the race, Jeff Abel, who had 21.1 percent, said he endorses Thayer for the runoff.

The runoff winner will face Democrat Kenya Pierre in the November general election.

Stultz said he thanks his supporters for showing up in the primary and sending him through to the runoff.

“Like any election, turnout will be the key [for success in the runoff],” he said. “We will continue to work hard reaching out to the voters.”

Stultz, an information technology director and analyst, said he is running for re-election because there are still challenges that exist for the school district, such as an achievement gap between students in different areas of the county, an imbalance between increasing costs and sustainable revenue, state and federal mandates that increase the cost of providing education and an inability to provide competitive salaries for teachers and administrators.

He has served on the school board for the past three years and said he has been a consistent, conservative voice on the board.

Thayer said she is very appreciative of all who voted for her and who worked for her campaign.

“We’ll continue what we’ve been doing — being accessible to voters and having open, honest conversations,” she said.

Thayer said the statistics of the last race were positive.

“Of the 19 precincts, we won 13, tied in another one and lost one by three votes,” she said. “When 67 percent of the voters are against the incumbent, I believe the people are saying they’re ready for a change.”

Thayer, a retired educator with 36 years of experience, said the top three issues facing the school board are selecting a strong superintendent, balancing the budget and concentrating less on operational issues and more on providing a quality educational experience for all students.

She has worked for Cobb schools as a high school counselor, high school principal, director of leadership management and executive director of high schools. Thayer has also worked in the Clayton and Douglas county school districts.

She said the biggest challenge facing this upcoming election will be getting voters back to the polls in the middle of the summer.
