At their regular meeting June 10, the City Schools of Decatur Board of Education adopted a tentative property tax rate of 20.50 mills for general operations. This is a decrease from the 2013 rate of 20.90 mills; however due to property reassessments, this will represent an average increase of 4.27 percent in property taxes.

This increase is consistent with new development and home sale data tracked by the city for the past three years. The state's Taxpayer Bill of Rights requires that this increase be advertised. For property that was not reassessed there should be no increase in property taxes.

The board will hold public hearings regarding this issue June 19 at 6 p.m. and July 8 at 6 p.m. The final millage will be set at the board meeting July 8 at 6:30 p.m.

All meetings are in the board room, City Schools of Decatur central offices at Beacon, 125 Electric Ave. in Decatur.
