CRCT shows science, social studies gains in Paulding

Paulding County school students meeting or exceeding state averages on a major assessment test gained or held steady in four of five subject areas this year, district officials said.

However, Criterion-Referenced Competency Test results also showed a sometimes wide disparity between individual Paulding schools’ results on the test, given to third- through eighth-graders statewide, according to results from the Georgia Department of Education.

County students’ averages for science and social studies increased this year compared to 2013 and previous years, said Jason Gregaydis, student assessment director for Paulding County schools.

“We had a good year,” he said.

Paulding students’ overall score in the sixth-grade levels meeting or exceeding state scores on science was 82 percent, up from 81 in 2013. It also was part of a four-year increase which included 78 percent in 2012 and 77 in 2011.

The social studies average in the six Paulding grades was 86 percent, an increase from 85 in 2013 and 81 in both 2012 and 2011.

The overall percentage who met or exceeded state standards on the reading test averaged 96 percent, which was no change from 96 in 2013 but up from 94 in 2012 and 93 in 2011.

They also averaged 88 percent in math, no change from 2013 but up from 83 in 2012 and 82 in 2011, according to figures from the Paulding school district.

Only English /language arts showed a decline after a three-year gain, dropping from 95 percent in 2013 to 93 percent in 2014.

Paulding exceeded the statewide score on 27 of the 30 tests, Gregaydis said. Six grades took five tests each, for a total of 30.

Local student only exceeded the statewide average on 18 of 30 tests in 2011 and 2012.

Percentages in individual elementary schools showed:

- In reading, percentages ranged from 100 percent in Shelton Elementary third grade and Russom Elementary and C.A. Roberts fifth grades to 82.1 in New Georgia Elementary fourth grade.

- English / language arts ranged from 100 percent in Shelton third grade and Russom fifth grade to 80.6 in Northside third grade.

- Math ranged from 98.1 in Shelton third grade, to 67.1 in Dallas Elementary fifth grade.

- Science ranged from 94.1 in Burnt Hickory Elementary fourth grade to 56.6 in Dallas Elementary third grade.

- Social studies ranged from 97.8 in Burnt Hickory fourth grade to 65.3 in Dallas fifth grade.

Percentages in individual middle schools showed:

- Reading ranged from 99.5 in Sammy McClure Middle sixth and eighth grades to 92.1 in Scoggins Middle eighth grade.

- English / language arts ranged from 98.9 for McClure eighth grade to Scoggins sixth grade, 84.3.

- Math ranged from 97.2 in McClure sixth grade to 71.9 in Scoggins eighth grade.

- Science ranged from 95.8 in Dobbins Middle seventh grade to 59.2 in P.B. Ritch Middle sixth grade.

- Social Studies ranged from 95.2 in McClure sixth grade to 70.2 in East Paulding Middle eighth grade.

However, students took the CRCT for the last time this year, state officials said. All students in grades three through eight will take the Georgia Milestones in 2015.

The new testing system include open-ended questions to gauge students’ content mastery better and, with some exceptions for special education students with specific testing accommodations, will be administered entirely online by the fifth year of implementation, a news release stated.
