After an incredibly successful high school soccer career at Fellowship Christian, Emily Sonnett has hardly missed a beat on the college level.

The rising junior defender/midfielder has made her mark at Virginia, establishing herself among the best players in the Atlantic Coast Conference during her first two years.

The 2013 season was a special one for Sonnett, who played a key role in Virginia’s run to the College Cup semifinals, where the Cavaliers (25-1-1) lost to UCLA 4-2 on penalty kicks after tying 1-all after regulation and overtime.

“Making it to the final four was a huge accomplishment,” Sonnett said. “We have a great group of girls and a great team. It was my second season at Virginia and everything came together for us.”

Sonnett started all 26 games for Virginia, contributing two goals and five assists and setting a school single-season record for most minutes played (2,341).

For her efforts, Sonnett was selected first-team All-ACC as well as first-team NSCAA All-Southeast Region and was picked as ACC player of the week last October.

As a freshman in 2012, she was selected to the All-ACC Freshman team – playing in all 24 games and starting 16 for the Cavaliers.

“There was a transition period my first year as a freshman, but its worked out great,” Sonnett said. “Virginia is a great college and I really enjoy being there. It is the right school for me.”

Sonnett has also been busy representing her country as a member of the U.S. Under-23 Women’s National team, which she has been a member of for the last year and a half.

She played with the national team in the Six Nations Tournament in La Manga, Spain Feb. 24 through March 6, where the U.S. U23 squad won its group.

“Coming up through the national team program, it’s a goal to make it to the U23 team,” Sonnett said. “It’s huge to be on the U23 team, because it’s the next step to the full national team. It’s a great opportunity for me.”

For Sonnett, it is a continuation of a run of success that she enjoyed at Fellowship, where she led the Paladins to the Class A state championship in 2012 and finished her career as the school’s all-time leading scorer.

She was also the 2012 Gatorade Georgia player of the year as well as an ESPN Rise first-team All-American selection and a NSCAA Youth All-American pick in 2011.

Excellent article -- I've been following her career since she left Fellowship and its good to see her doing well in the ACC and with Women's National U 23 Team.
