Paulding high school students topped their counterparts statewide on five of eight subjects on the end-of-course test given to Georgia public high school students in spring of this year, officials reported.

The scores also showed a trend of increasing scores in the county’s schools in subjects for which the tests were given since 2012, said Jason Gregaydis, director of student assessment for the Paulding School District.

“We’re pretty pleased with the trend we’ve seen,” he said. “Any time you see a positive trend, it’s exciting.”

End-of-course tests are students’ final exams in associated courses in public high schools throughout Georgia. The school district showed steady increases in scores on six subjects between 2012 and 2014. Paulding students increased their scores in ninth-grade literature, rising from 82.8 percent meeting or exceeding standards in 2012 to 88.5 in 2014. They also showed improvement in physical science, 72.1 in 2012 to 83.2 in 2014; and U.S. history, 68.5 to 78.5.

However, the most dramatic rise was in math in coordinate algebra. Though officials only began giving the test in 2013, Paulding students’ average scores rose 11 points from 30.2 in 2013 to 41.3 in 2014. The 2014 state average was 40.3.

In comparison to their peers statewide in spring 2014, Paulding scores matched or exceeded Georgia on coordinate algebra, biology, U.S. history, economics, ninth-grade literature and American literature, but were slightly below the state on analytic geometry and physical science, the results showed. Results for individual schools showed North Paulding High School exceeded the statewide scores on all eight subjects, while East Paulding High topped the state average on all except analytic geometry.

Hiram High exceeded the state on five of eight subjects and South Paulding High exceeded the state on three. Paulding County High only topped the state on U.S. history.

Individual schools’ results also showed:

-- Ninth-grade literature scores ranged from North Paulding’s 94.9 to South Paulding’s 87.0. The state average was 87.7.

-- American literature scores ranged from Hiram’s 94.7 to South Paulding’s 89.8. The state average was 92.6.

-- Coordinate algebra scores ranged from North Paulding’s 50.4 to South Paulding’s 35.6. The state average was 40.3.

-- Analytic geometry scores ranged from North Paulding’s 44.7 to 23.1 at Paulding County High. The state average was 34.6.

-- Biology scores ranged from 82.8 at East Paulding High, to Paulding County High’s 73.8. The state average was 75.0.

-- Physical science scores ranged from North Paulding’s 88.4, to South Paulding’s 75.2. The state average was 84.6.

-- U.S. history scores ranged from North Paulding’s 86.3 to South Paulding’s 72.9. The state average was 72.8.

-- Economics scores ranged from South Paulding’s 91.8 to Paulding County High’s 76.1. The state average was 81.2.
