Officials have opted to move forward with the city of Sandy Springs’ extensive road improvements campaign.

At its meeting Tuesday at City Hall, the City Council voted 5-0 to approve Northwest Georgia Paving Inc. for receipt of the fiscal 2015 capital resurfacing/local maintenance improvement grant contract, essentially empowering the firm to execute the project. District 2 Councilman Ken Dishman was absent.

The governing body’s decision allows the city to move forward with the Sandy Springs Pavement Maintenance Pro-gram, which entails dozens of streets previously identified for a makeover based on their respective PCI (Pavement Condition Index) ratings. Targeted roadways include the Glenridge Connector from Glenridge Drive to Peachtree Dun-woody Road and Hammond Drive from Roswell Road to Harleston Drive.

The projected cost for the planned road work — sub-surfacing, resurfacing, striping and related activity — has been tabbed at about $3.1 million, said Garrin Coleman, the city’s director of public works.

“We are going to have remove six streets … those are the highest rated on the PCI Index,” Coleman said.

Removing those streets — including Forrest Lake Drive, from Lake Forrest Drive to Mount Paran Road — allows the city to come in under budget. They could, however, wind up on the list again in the event the council finds additional funds.

“We review roads and their rankings every three years, so we’ll be prepared to do it again next spring,” Coleman said.
