India-based Surya Inc. broke ground on a new corporate office and distribution facility at the Highland 75 Industrial Park off Cass-White Road in Bartow County this month.

News of the company’s move from Gordon County was announced earlier in the summer and in addition to about 200 permanent jobs, the construction phase of the new facility, which will measure more than 1 million square feet, will employ about 165 during peak construction.

Gov. Nathan Deal, who made his second trip to the county in a matter of weeks for the ceremony held Aug. 5, said the county’s preparation and planning for economic development efforts speak volumes for future success.

“We’re making a habit of this,” Deal said. “But it’s a good habit. That’s what it takes — all of us focused in the right direction.”

The company makes machine and hand-knotted rugs and sells soft goods for the home furnishings market, a news release stated.

The rugs and decorative accessories are made abroad and shipped to the U.S. for sales and distribution operations. Surya markets its products to the retailer, interior designer and hospitality markets globally from its current location.

“On behalf of Bartow County, we are very pleased that Surya has chosen a site in an area that we believe is one of the Southeast’s premier locations for business,” said Bartow County Commissioner Steve Taylor in a statement released in June. “I’m happy to welcome them to Bartow’s corporate community and look forward to a great partnership.”
