Led by Celia Tornero, the first Hampton Hornets volleyball team will have 10 players and very realistic goals.

“I told the parents the expectations for the girls are to just play as a team and improve,” Tornero said. “It is not important if we win or don’t win. I just want them to learn and to work from there. If we win, then that’s much better, but that is not the goal this year. I just want them to enjoy themselves and improve this year."

Tornero said the expectations will rise next year since the girls will have a season under their belt and another offseason.

The process of a new program is not new to Tornero, who is a native of Valencia, Spain. During her time as a teacher in Barcelona, Tornero was inspired to bring volleyball back to her school after it was deemed no longer necessary.

“Volleyball had stopped being taught at the school for five, six years,” Tornero said. “The students in my class wanted to play volleyball and they knew I played. So they asked me could I be their coach and I restarted the program.”

Interestingly, the enthusiasm that team had for the sport is the same as Tornero’s current team.

“The girls and coaches here are really excited to start a program and you can really see it,” she said.

“To start a program here with students who are new to the school is exciting. The participation and motivation is high.”

Tornero, who has been playing volleyball since she was 10 years old, will be assisted by Fay Culverson and Gladys Gilmore.

According to the school’s website, the first members of the varsity and junior varsity teams are: Jillian Hughes, Samantha Reinert, Xziree Freeman, Destiny Crumpler, Aliyah Austin, Camille Uadiale, Asante Culverson, Elizabeth House, Chelsea Cornog, Kaci Schramm, Claire Brown, Tiffany Morris, Alicia Roberts, Akira Rogers, Iliana Barnes, Brianna Pearson, Megan Brown, Tasiya Rodriguez, Paula Cristobal and Janae Davis.
