The DeKalb County Board of Ethics declined to pursue complaints against four elected officials during its meeting Aug. 14.

The ethics board tossed out complaints against DeKalb County Interim CEO Lee May and commissioners Jeff Rader and Stan Watson, as well as Sheriff Jeff Mann. The reasons for the dismissals included complaints lacking a specific claim of unethical action or the board lacking the authority to investigate a claim.

“It is gratifying to see that our revitalized board of ethics is proceeding deliberately, responsibly and rapidly to process the concerns of our residents,” said May. “There was never a doubt in my mind about the propriety of my actions, but the point is that complaints can be vetted thoroughly through an independent organization.”

“The board of ethics will continue to be a crucial tool to make certain our government is transparent to the people we serve, said Rader. “From time to time, there will be a frivolous complaint such as the one that was dismissed against me, but it is a small price to pay for the value of ensuring government is accountable to its citizens.”

Another complaint alleging interference of the ethics board by the interim CEO and the entire board of commissioners was also dismissed.

“This board takes every complaint very seriously, and we evaluate every complaint on its merits,” said John Ernst, ethics board chair. “If the code of ethics calls for action, we will act.”
