Buckhead resident Hutton Snellings, 25, had a creative eye from an early age.

“My whole life I used to always look at my mom’s Veranda magazines and was obsessed with Architectural Digest,” she said.

One night when she was about 13 or 14, Snellings decided to paint a re-creation of an image from one of the magazines.

“I stayed up all night and my mom walked out the next morning and she said ‘Oh, my God,’ [because] it was identical to the one in the Veranda magazine,” she said. “I just remember thinking this is what I definitely want to do.”

A graduate of The Lovett School and The University of Mississippi, Snellings has been working as a full-time professional artist for the past two years. Her work is sold exclusively at Rumson Gifts and Home Furnishings in Buckhead.

“We met in January of this year, … and we just really hit it off,” said owner Catherine McGahan. “Blue is my favorite color, and she uses a lot of blue and white and gold, and I find it really calming and peaceful. So that drew me in immediately, and people loved [her work].”

Said Snellings, “[McGahan] understood my type of personality. She’s just great. We have the same eye when it comes to interior décor.”

Though Snellings started off just displaying her art and selling from McGahan’s showroom, the pair’s working relationship grew to the point where McGahan now serves as Snellings’ business manager.

“At this point I’m just helping her keep [her clients] straight and helping with the billing so she can actually paint,” McGahan said.

Snellings said her creative process involves movement and music.

“When I paint, everybody laughs because I’m always moving around,” she said. “I’m always moving on my feet. I love to paint outside.”

Snellings said she often listens to the same song or artist over and over again while working on a particular piece, though she regularly switches up the genre.

She describes her style as large, abstract pieces that evoke calming, soothing vibes and include layers and contrast. Snellings said she is just one more artist trying to get her name out there and is determined to make sure her success continues.
